Son of Mutara II Rwogera, Rwabugiri is known in the history of Rwanda for his many adventurous wars of conquest that were intended to expand the kingdom of Rwanda. He had several titles that marked his glory (Ibisingizo), including Inkotanyi cyane, Rwangakugwabira. His military and political career was so great that attracted the admiration of the Belgian colonizers. By virtue of his renowned bravery almost equal to that of Ruganzu Ndoli, King Rwabugiri became known far and near. He defeated the Banyabungo and the Bahima. He conquered Ijwi and killed Kabego, the king of that island.
