King Heonjong’s Letter Appointing Lady Kim as Consort Gyeongbin

This is king’s order installing a daughter of Kin Jae-cheong as a queen of Heongjong in 1847 (year 13 of Heonjong). Specific details and depictions about this order are described in a book 『Gyeongbin garyesi garyecheong deungrok』. This order was copied in a colorful silk of red, yellow, blue, white and black, in a scroll of jade axis. At the beginning of the order is weaved a rising dragon and in between is the word ‘Gyomyeong (King’s order)’ in yellow silk thread. This is a very valuable material in studying installation of late Joseon period and its document system.

Original Title: Gyeongbin Kimssi chaekbong gyomyeong (경빈김씨책봉교명, 慶嬪金氏冊封敎命)
Korean caption: 1847년(헌종 13) 김재청(金在淸)의 딸을 헌종의 빈(嬪)으로 책봉할 때 내린 교명(敎命)이다. 이 교명에 대해서는 『경빈가례시가례청등록(慶嬪嘉禮時嘉禮廳謄錄)』에 재료나 도식(圖式) 등이 자세하다. 옥축(玉軸)으로 만든 두루마리 형태로 홍․황․남․백․흑의 순서로 이어붙인 화려한 오색비단에 필사하였다. 교명이 시작되는 첫 부분에 승강하는 용(龍)이 짜여 있고, 그 사이에 전문(篆文)으로 쓴 ‘교명(敎命)’이라는 글자가 황진사(黃眞絲)로 짜여있다. 조선후기 책봉과 문서제도를 연구하는 데 매우 귀중한 자료이다.
