This photograph of the King's Bridge over the South Esk River in Launceston, Tasmania is part of the book 'Roads and bridges of Tasmania' by Dr. J.J.C. Bradfield.
King's Bridge is a wrought-iron arch bridge which, at the time of its construction in 1864, was the only form of vehicular river crossing in Launceston. It carried tramways and road traffic. In 1992, the King's Bridge was honoured with a Historic Engineering Marker from Engineers Australia, as part of its Engineering Heritage Recognition Program.
Most famously known for the design and construction of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, Dr. J.J.C. Bradfield created a collection of 15 books documenting the early construction of Australia's roads, bridges and railways from the late 19th century through to the mid-20th century.
