King Yeongjo’s Letter appointing Uiso as a Grandson-Heir Apparent

This is king’s official order of appointing Uiso (1750-1752) as a grandson-heir apparent in May 1751 (year 27 of Yeongjo). Uiso was the eldest son of the crown prince Jangheon, and was Jeongjo’s brother. He was appointed as a grandson-heir apparent when he was one year old, but passed away next year March. The book which has three kinds of silk around the cover such as blue cloud pattern silk, and has colorful ropes and jade knob shows the majesty of king’s order. The text was written by Yi Cheon-bo, a civil servant at Yemungwan.

- korean caption: 1751년(영조 27) 5월 의소세손(懿昭世孫, 1750~1752) 정(琔)을 왕세손으로 책봉할 때 내린 교명(敎命)이다. 의소세손은 장헌세자의 장남이자 정조의 형으로 2세에 세손으로 책봉되었다가 이듬해 3월 졸서하였다. 남색 구름무늬 비단 등 세 가지 비단으로 가장자리를 두르고, 오색다회 끈과 옥축두 등을 갖추고 있어 조선시대 교명의 장황 형식을 잘 보여준다. 교명문은 예문관 제학 이천보(李天輔)가 작성하였다.
