Objects used in warfare often did not simple have to function, they had to look good. This figure-eight or hourglass shaped shield has tassels of parrot feathers, seeds and twine that have been attached to the finely woven rattan covering. This rattan covering extends around the back of the shield, fixing a handle in place. Despite the apparent fineness of the rattan binding and decorative elements, this was a functional shield, one that would have been used in warfare or combat.
