In 1972, at the age of 81, Thomas was the first Black woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. During the same year, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in D.C. hosted a much larger exhibition of her work, and one of her paintings was selected for the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
