Photograph of the law office of Patrick Henry at Red Hill in its highly modified form. After the expanded Red Hill mansion burned to the ground in 1919, Henry's great-granddaughter, Lucy Gray Henry Harrison, moved into this small building. Harrison expanded the building to accommodate her needs. Around 1910, a square building with a pyramid hip roof was attached to the side of the law office. A photograph ca. 1912 shows the building with additions much as it is in this picture. The development of this structure from Henry’s time in the late 1790s through the 1940s is not completely known or documented.
The photograph came from a collection of photographs taken by Charles Phelps Cushing for the James Sawders Management Company. Both Cushing and Sawders were photographers and journalists. Cushing was the editor of the Stars and Stripes magazine and wrote several articles on American history.
