Legnica, Poland

The Neo-Renaissance edifice of the Evangelical Municipal Gymnasium in Legnica, visible in the center of the photograph, was built in 1865-1867 according to the design of the city construction inspector Otto Kirchner. On the façade there is the Latin sentence SAPIENTI ATQUE ELOQUENTI PIETATI (wise and meaningful devotion). The school was located here until 1937. Then the building was handed over to the newly established People's House of Education (Volksbildungshaus), which, in addition to the representative city hall, housed the collections of the library, archives and museum in Legnica. On the right is the Reichsbank building, established in 1874 and expanded in 1901.
