Charles William Ross was the most important English miniaturist of the nineteenth century. His patrons included the Royal Court of England and most of the aristocracy and middle classes, as well as several great names of European royal families. In 1837 he was appointed portrait painter to Queen Victoria and was knighted in 1843. This miniature shows Leslie Ward, with a rosebud in her hand, and her sis-ter. Leslie was a famous caricaturist under the pseudonym Spy: in 1873 she started working for Vanity Fair, and made 2300 caricatures.
