Takeno Jōō (1502-1555) was a tea master of the Sengoku period. He studied the tea ceremony, Japanese Poem of Waka, and the art of incense, etc. He was ordained in Tenbun 1 (1532) under Kogaku, Sōkō at Daitokuji Temple, and also practice Zen meditation under Dairin Sōtō. He is said to have studied under Murata Sōshu and Jūshiya Sōgo, disciple of Murata Jukō, and played a role in further deepening Jukō’s wabicha (tea ceremony) and passing it on to the next generation, including Sen’no Rikyū.
