Letter by Takeno Jōō

Takeno Jōō (1502-1555) was a tea master of the Sengoku period. He studied the tea ceremony, Japanese waka poetry, and the art of incense, among other things. He was ordained in Tenbun 1 (1532) under Kogaku Sōkō (1465-1548) at Daitokuji Temple and also practiced Zen meditation under Dairin Sōtō. He is said to have been a student of Murata Sōshu and Jūshiya Sōgo, disciples of Murata Jukō, and contributed to the development of Jukō’s wabicha (tea ceremony), passing it on to the next generation, including Sen’no Rikyū.
