February 16, 1947 Professeur E. CARTAN 95, Bd Jourdan PARIS, France My dear colleague, I thank you very much for your letter of January 14th which brough me the sad news that the Germans have murdered your son. All the crimes the Germans have committed seem to be not impressive enough for the people in power of the socalled democracies. The wish to prevent economic democracy is stronger than the wish to create security against the Nazis and other fascists. I have studied a good deal of Mr. Tschernoff's work and am really impressed by the deep insight it gives into the moving forces of our time. I shall try to interest an American publisher in it ; it will not be easy, however, for printing is expensive here and the trend of the reading public goes towards sensational matters rather than to deep and painstaking investigations. The death of Paul LANGEVIN was already known to me when I received your letter. He was one of the few men whom I admired and loved deeply. He was really too good and pure for this world. I am sending you my last papers. After so many years it is the first time that I found a generalisation of the gravitation theory that has some chance to be true. I do not agree with Schrodinger’s slight modification of it which he made public a few weeks ago. Witch kind regards and wishes Yours cordially A. Einstein
