This image shows Li Ling Pagoda in 1957. Pokfulam Village is the only place in Hong Kong worshipping Goddess Li Ling, who is believed to be a local villager in the past. Legend has it that, during the time malaria spread across Pokfulam Village, a villager received a message from Li Ling in her dream, promising to protect the village. After the plague died down, the villagers built the pagoda to express their gratitude to Li Ling. Another saying is that a Pokfulam villager, Luo Yung, was meditating at home to compete against another taoist practitioner and receiving power from the spirit of Li Ling, but died when accidentally disturbed by his family. The villagers therefore built the pagoda to commemorate this event.
