Lobster

Nagasawa Rosetsu

Fukuda Art Museum

Fukuda Art Museum
Kyoto, Japan

The lobster is so large that its body extends beyond the frame, its dark red shell covered with rough spines and a realistic monochrome pattern. Larger than life, the lobster stretches diagonally across the scroll from the lower left to the upper right, its huge body extending outside the scroll. The smaller shrimp nearby helps emphasize its size and impact. While this technique was also used in works created in Rosetsu’s late 20s, works from his 40s feature it even more prominently.
