Locomotive headlamps can be of two types. They can be powerful white light illuminating headlamps, occupying the upper part of the front of the locomotives and illuminating the track in front of the train. Or they can be positioned in front of the train, in a lower level on each side, either white, red or green, indicating the conditions under which a train circulates and transmitting warnings to station and line workers or other running trains.
