Almería, Spain

Luis Siret (Sint-Niklaas, East Flanders, Belgium 1860 Herrerias, Almería 1934), mining engineer, was one of the most important figures of European archeology of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, being the father of scientific archeology in Andalusia and one of the pioneers in the introduction of modern archaeological method in Spain. In 1880 he was hired by Company of Sierra Almagrera, and the first seven years of his stay in Almería were the height of his archaeological activities. Here he excavated and researched many sites which helped reveal the two most important cultures of recent prehistory in the Iberian Peninsula: Los Millares and El Argar.
