Madonna and Child

Domenico Moroneearly 16th century

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

The wooden board shows balanced harmony and a great sentimental and human vivacity, which go beyond the traditional devotional icon. The juxtaposed faces of the Virgin and the Child are also complementary for the lowered gaze of the mother and the very lively one of the son, who appears singularly dynamic. One of the reasons for the charm of the small image is the dark background, which brings out the bright colors, where the yellow of the veil prevails. The trend of the light, the position and the gaze of the figures almost certainly presuppose a view from below. The small board, with an anomalous format, could have been the upper central element of a polyptych.
