Madonna and Child

Giovanni Bellini1470 - 1479

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

The great Venetian painter Giovanni Bellini, son of Jacopo and brother- in-law of Andrea Mantegna, who had married his sister Nicolosia, is represented here by a Madonna of extremely fine quality, regardless a certain paint loss over time. A highly refined interpretation, it is almost monochromatic, with gradations of tone suggested in the highlighted tints of the flesh and on the Virgin’s veil. Psychological concentration is centered on the crossed hands and the glances between mother and son.
