Madonna and Child with Saint Margaret

Francesco Bonsignori1485 - 1489

Museo di Castelvecchio

Museo di Castelvecchio
Verona, Italy

Composed along Mantegnesque lines, this panel appears to be a late work of Bonsignori, from his Mantuan period when he was court painter to the Gonzaga. The hand of the Veronese painter is recognizable in the snakelike locks of the saint’s hair and the wooden, sculptural rigidity of other details, such as the draperies and the hands of the Virgin.
