A decade after Independence, the theme of gods and goddesses was still strong. The iconograohy used here depicts one of the most revered bond and an endearing sentiment of the Indian household - that of brotherly love.
This is a story that has been told and retold many times over. Given a challenge by Lord Shiva and Parvati to go around the Universe with the quickest to complete the task being awarded the prize: a mango with special powers. Karthikeya sets off instantly on his peacock but Ganesha stays put. He then decides to go around his parents thrice as he believes they personify his universe. Being judged the winner, Shiva awards the mango to him; Karthikeya returns and on realising he has lost the race, is upset by the defeat. Ganesha doesn't walk away with the spoils but opts to share the mango with his brother.
Notice the images of spindles on the top left corner of this calendar.
A spindle is a spinning frame from which yarn is made. This calendar acknowledges this strong framework – much like that of sibling devotion – in the production of yarn made by Madura Mills Co., Ltd.
