Patrick Henry's Red Hill
Brookneal, Virginia, United States

This brass bell is believed to have originated at Scotch Town in Hanover County, Virginia, and, according to family tradition, was acquired by Patrick Henry and his wife, Sarah Shelton, from one of their fathers. Both of their fathers were magistrates—civilian officers who help administer the law—and a bell such as this one would have been used to bring the court to order during times of civil unrest and interruptions.
