The relationship between man and dog goes back to prehistoric times, when the first has been able not only to domesticate the other, but also to involve it in the activities which were necessary in order to survive.
In this sculpture in fact, Crocetti doesn't portray a playful or an affectionate scene between the man and his dog, but rather a specific moment of the hunting. The dog is portrayed in a pointing position i.e. when the animal has sniffed its prey and signals it to his owner standing still and shaking to make clear fast the moment of attention of the hunter before shooting the prey.
