An archaeological Mapungubwe black burnished incurvate bowl dating approximately from AD 1220- AD 1290 excavated in the 1930s from trench JS2 (b) from the occupation area at the base of the western ascent of Mapungubwe Hill the Iron Age site in South Africa. Typologically this is a variation of the shallow bowl forms, with four incised cross-hatch decoration within diamond forms. The ellipsoid form is restricted projecting out from a globular body, rounded rim and a round base. The opening diameter is restricted.This bowl (N238) forms part of the Mapungubwe National Heritage Collection- specifically declared as a heritage object of South Africa. This vessel forms part of the specifically declared Mapungubwe collection at the University of Pretoria.
