As the day approached when Andalusia was to decide, by means of a referendum, the route to become an autonomous region, more than a million Andalusians marched in its main cities, called by the Junta de Andalucía. Under the motto "Andalusia by itself, for Spain and Humanity", they supported the road to autonomy and put pressure on some reluctant political parties, especially Unión de Centro Democrático despite it had also convened the demonstration. In Seville, about 200,000 people took part in a protest day tarnished only by some incidents at the end of the march, when it approached the headquarters of a right-wing extremist group whose members provoked the demonstrators.
