«Maria da Fonte» was one of Júlio Pomar’s most emblematic paintings, capturing the energy, movement, and intensity of the shapeless crowd that took part in the popular uprising in the Minho region in the nineteenth century, led by the heroine brandishing a raised scythe. The sombre tones and the visceral drama of the scene also mark the transition toward a more gestural type of painting, composed of rapid brushstrokes, tense volumes, and discontinuous figuration.
