A painting titled Martin by the South African artist Elly Holm (1911-2000). Martin, depicted in 1984 was the grandson of the artist and she painted him on his birthday in 1984. Short Biography: Elly Helene Holm (nee Pabst) was born on 11 April in Germany in 1911 and immigrated to South Africa in 1946. Elly Holm has worked in many media and is considered one of the most versatile South African artists using eight techniques or media. Many architects commissioned her work. Holm did extensive work at the well-known landmark of Friedenskirche in Hillbrow in Johannesburg in the 1960’s. Her stained glass windows are particularly noteworthy as is the large esgraffico work in the transept and the painting of the dome in the east entrance. Holm trained for over five years at the Kunstakademie in Leipzig (Academy of Fine Arts). She lived in the North West Province and was a prolific artist creating a diversity of numerous drawings and paintings in wide media. In 1990 Holm donated over 200 of her sketches to the University of Pretoria. Holm passed away on 9 December 2000.
