The pilgrimage of El Rocío is a Marian pilgrimage to a town of the same name in the municipality of Almonte (Huelva). This tradition has its origins in the 17th century and takes place every year on Pentecost Monday, in honor of the Virgin of El Rocío. In the days leading up to Pentecost, over 100 brotherhoods and sisterhoods head for the village of Almonte from beyond the borders of Andalusia and converge at the sanctuary of the Virgin. Those who partake in the pilgrimage traditionally travel via horse with embellished carts and wagons, horse drawn carriages, or by foot, which is the most extreme approach.
