The National Socialists used the Luitpold Arena in part as a memorial to those who had died in World War I, but even more for those who died in Hitler's failed Putsch of 1923, who were revered here as martyrs. Here, the leaders of the paramilitary Sturmabteilung (SA) and the Schutzstaffel security staff (SS) stand beside Adolf Hitler before the city's monument to the dead of World War I. The National Socialists held their Party Rallies in Nuremberg from 1933 to 1938, and the Luitpold Arena was one of the few structures on the Rally Grounds to actually be completed.
