Long and strong ropes were needed in the Salt Mine in Wieliczka from the moment of its founding. They were necessary for cutting drifts and transporting the output to the surface. It is possible that first ropemakers came to Wieliczka as early as at the end of the 13th century. In Wieliczka, ropemakers’ work, like that of coopers and blacksmiths, was closely connected with the Salt Mine. Very high demand of the salt mine for all kinds of ropes and cords used for horizontal and vertical transport in the mine contributed to the flourishing of this craft in the town. Initially, linden phloem ropes were used in the mine in Wieliczka, and then, from the 15th century - those made of hemp. in 1853, Vienna Treasury demanded that hoisting shafts in Wieliczka are equipped in wire (steel) ropes - more durable and cheaper than those made of hemp. Such a type of rope is in use today.
