Model of a so-called Greathead lifeboat

In 1789, Henry Greathead constructed an oakwood lifeboat of just over 9 meters in length and a maximum width of over 3 meters, which derived its buoyancy mainly from the heavy cork belt fitted inboard and outboard under the edge of the vehicle. It was introduced in the Netherlands in 1808/1809. The boat is suspended under a two-wheeled wagon, a so-called 'mallejan', which was used for transport to and from the high tide line. Dimensions of the model (lxwxh): 40,5 x 28,5 x 24 cm.
