The model of the Chapel of Saint John the Baptist was conceived in 1744-1747, in the context of the royal commission made by King John V to Rome. This piece, which is particularly rare in Portugal, is a witness of the introduction in our country of a way of conceiving the architectural project in successive phases of maturity. Designed by the architect Luigi Vanvitelli (1700-73), with further alterations imposed by the Portuguese Court to the original design, its execution was entrusted to the cabinetmaker Giuseppe Palms. Giuseppe Focheti and Giuseppe Voyet carried out the painting imitating marble. In his turn, Gennaro Nicoletti painted the miniatured paintings on oil on copper.
