The work of Austrian painter Robert Russ is often a mise-en-scène with vivid colour and light effects, evolving into a free, sketch-like style, which classes the artist with the so-called "mood impressionists".

This large-format work focuses on the specific light conditions after a thunderstorm. The atmosphere of humidity and hazy light is enhanced by bold contrasts of light and shade. Narrative elements, such as the broken bridge over to the isolated farmstead and the undamaged wayside cross at the edge of the raging torrent emphasise the dramatic effect.
Characteristically, Russ used different techniques and tools to achieve individual textures – a combination of delicate, detailed brushwork, a blottesque process and the use of "rough" tools such as spatula or palette knife.
