This five-character elegy was composed by Shen Yinmo in memory of Qian Xuantong, the venerated linguist who passed away in 1939.

Shen Yinmo, was a native of Wuxing, graduated from the imperial University in Tokyo and taught at the Chinese Department of Peking University. He was involved in the New Culture Movement. Shen became the deputy director of the Central Research Institute of Culture and History in 1949.
