Mykhailo Maksymovych (1804-1873) was a historian, ethnographer, linguist, and a friend of Taras Shevchenko. In 1834, he became the first rector of the Kyiv University. Maksymovych came from an old Cossack starshyna (military officers) family from Poltava region.
