Tomás Gonda’s life involved him in the formulation of design on a global scale. Born in 1926, Gonda spent his early years in Hungary and after the war in Argentina. As he matured, with years spent in Ulm, Milan and New York, together with his ongoing fascination with Asia, these many influences evolved into a diverse and engaging body of work at the forefront of design innovation. Tomás Gonda is credited with a major role in the critical establishment of graphic design in Argentina and important contributions to the Ulm School of Design in Germany. Gonda was an important, though under-recognized, influence in late 20th-century design. Simultaneously, Gonda produced a substantial body of fine art, which informed, and was informed by, his design interests and became an outlet for his ruminations on the minimal nuances of colour, light and form. Tomás Gonda died in New York in 1988.
