Neck ring

Rijksmuseum van Oudheden

Rijksmuseum van Oudheden
Leiden, Netherlands

This remarkably beautiful gold, open neck ring (known as a torque) was brought to the Netherlands through trade relations with the territories of present-day Germany. The owner of this expensive, rare piece of jewellery would certainly have been an important person. An inhabitant of the city of Heelen discovered the torque in his garden in 1999, when he was busy digging out the foundations for a new conservatory behind his house. Its uniqueness derives from the fact that to date, it is the only gold torque that has ever been found in the Netherlands.
