Fabritio Caroso from Sermoneta (Latium) served as dancing master for prominent families in Tuscany, primarily for the Medici. In his famous work “Nobiltà di Dame”, he describes the many dances for one or more couples. Each of these choreographies is dedicated to a different, named noble lady, often supplemented by a dedicatory poem. The delightful representation of the dance “Contrapasso Nuovo”, shown in the form of a flower, is famous, and is dedicated to Contessa Cornelia Orsina Cesi (p. 241). Illustrations of the correct dancing position of sumptuously clad couples, detailed and easily understood verbal descriptions of dances and pieces of music (in tabulature) permit a deep insight into the world of Renaissance dance.
