The Providence Petrel (Pterodroma solandri) was once found on Norfolk Island, but was completely exterminated by 1800 as they were harvested for food. It is currently found on Lord Howe Island and on Philip Island.

The etching is credited to Peter Mazell, an Irish painter and engraver, working in London between c. 1761 and 1797.

This illustration was published in 'The voyage of Governor Phillip to Botany Bay : with an account of the establishment of the colonies of Port Jackson & Norfolk Island'.
