The harshness of the landscape of the outside world, built by sheer brute force to extract the wine from the schist soil, contrasts with the interior of the churches. Mural paintings, the gilded woodcarvings and the imagery, with their polychrome and profuse forms, elevate the spaces of devotion scattered throughout the region. They mitigate and give rhythm to the harshness of daily life through festivals and celebrations.
