Silver, ormolu and wood NSW Championship Lawn Tennis Tournament shield won by Miss R.H. Payten 1902; Miss R.H. Payten 1903. Silverwork on this shield trophy is very fine and depicts a tennis match in progress (albeit with male participants) complete with umpire with scorecard in chair, plus a delicately chased representation of the grand stand and spectators including men in tophats, children and ladies in bonnets holding parasols. This may be a depiction of early grandstand at the Sydney Cricket Ground where the tournament was played from its inception in 1885-1908; the tournament then moved to Double Bay courts from 1909-1921: White City grounds from 1922-1999 and Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre from 2000-present.
Rose 'Rosie' Hannah Payten was a champion NSW player who won the NSW Ladies Singles Championship six times. She played in a long skirt, long sleeved blouse and a bonnet or cap which was the accepted sports attire of the time and was described in newspaper accounts of the time as 'most versatile. She played the game as a man would, coming in to rally on her service. She drove, she chopped, she lobbed, she volleyed, equally adept in any part of the court'. All this whilst wearing the restrictive garb of the time. She retired from tennis in 1907 after an unbeaten record in singles over 7 years (the NSW Championship was not played in 1905). She was also a champion golfer.
