Originating at the ACG between 1878 and 1880 the Sydney Lawn Tennis Club or Association Lawn Tennis Club as it was known until 1887, is regarded as the oldest tennis club in Australia. The original grass tennis courts were laid at the northern end of the ground but many significant tournaments were played on courts marked out on the cricket ground.
The club has the honour of initiating and hosting the first inter-colonial tennis competition at the grounds from 1885 until 1908 when the tournament was moved to Double Bay.
