Old Government House from above. The appearance of Old Government House today owes much to the second rebuild by Governor and Mrs Macquarie, whose 1815-17 extensions transformed the building from a single storey cottage to a Palladian style residence. Government House played a 'command centre' role during the convict era and was where governors made decisions about key aspects of convicts' lives, such as the work they were assigned.
