The devotion of the city's inhabitants to Saint Anne is also further deepened by the consecration one of the gates of the mediaeval wall to the saint – a gate known as the Saint Anne's Archway (Portuguese: Arco da Santana), a name that the Portuguese writer Almeida Garrett (1799 – 1854) would later use as title for a historical novel.
