As kids, the word, "Thathera" was a mere consonance with the 'th' syllable that we enjoyed murmuring. Let's look into the life of this UNESCO recognized community of the Thatheras. It is not only their culture, it is their values and beliefs. The Thatheras of Jandiala Guru take great pride in their glorious past and pledge to take it to the future. The love for their culture, the belongingness to the town of Jandiala Guru, and the fire in their heart to take the craft beyond increases everyday. There isn't one day which is spent without using their hammer to redefine the beauty of the heritage of this craft! P-TAL aims at reviving the dying craft form of the indigenous Thatheras community of Jandiala Guru, Amritsar. The Thatheras of Jandiala Guru are a community of skilled craftsmen who specialize in the traditional technique of making hand crafted Brass, copper and bell metal utensils by hammering metal sheets. This unique craft of the Thatheras of Jandiala Guru in Amritsar is the first craft of India to be inscribed in the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2014.
