  • Title: Painting of Brattleboro, VT
  • Creator: Feld, Martha Jeannie (Hayes)
  • Date: 1858
  • Physical Location: Fremont, Ohio
  • Provenance: In Mary Ann Hayes Bigelow's record, page 105 she writes: "In the early weeks of 1858 Jennie painted for us the large picture, in oil, of our village. She was then only sixteen years old and her only teacher had been Miss Helen Dunklie. On our return to Sioux City we took the picture with us and it was a dear reminder of the pleasant home scenery in Vermont..." Jennie was the daughter of Russell Hayes, grand-daughter of Chloe Hayes. She married Joseph Nash Field. Mary Ann Bigelow was also a daughter of Russell Hayes, who was an uncle of Rutherford B. Hayes. Mary Ann inherited the Hayes family home at Brattleboro, Vermont, and used it for a summer home. She was so homesick in Iowa that Jeanette, her sister painted the picture of Vermont for her.
