This piece has been interpreted as a decoration of a funeral mound or platform constructed in stone. Usually, a sculpture of an animal (bull, lion, sphinx, or griffin) in a funerary pose is placed upon these monuments. Various classical or Hellenic decorative elements, such as palmettes or cymas are usually placed in the corners of these constructions. These types of structures are associated with the elite, and their components might be intentionally broken and reutilized in more modest burial sites in the same necropolis.
