This satirical map of Europe shows the various nations in the form of symbolic animals—for example the German eagle—or as typecast figures—i.e. French Marianne. Its subject are the nations’ various attitudes—offensive, observant, defensive—at the start of World War I. In its German edition by the publisher W. Nöltings, the print originally produced and distributed in England is retitled to symbolize “Albion’s perfidy”, i.e. the ‘deceitful’ politics of England.
