Slant top standing desk made of mixed woods. The hinged top covers one shelf and two drawers underneath. It secures in front with a locking mechanism. Written in pencil inside the lid reads "17th March in shop."
Made for and used by Patrick Henry at Red Hill, this desk was crafted by a local—likely enslaved—carpenter. Henry's widow, Dorothea Dandridge Henry Winston, spent her final days at the Seven Islands plantation, owned by their daughter Sallie Butler Henry Scott and son-in-law Alexander Scott. Upon arrival, she brought numerous pieces of furniture that had belonged to him, including this desk.
