Federico Villareal (Lambayeque, 1850-Lima, 1923) was a professor, mathematician, civil and mining engineer, who wrote about 600 articles of scientific interest and came to occupy positions such as dean and rector at the National University of San Marcos. He was also a promoter of the Esperanto language, editing a magazine that he directed and maintained until his death. He fought in the War of the Pacific and participated in the political life of the country, for which when he died, the State paid him posthumous honors.
