Juana Manuela Gorriti Zuviria (Rosario de la Frontera, 1816-Buenos Aires, 1892) was an Argentinean writer and one of the most well-known novelist of the 19th century. Since her childhood she was in contact with the political bustle of her region, which resulted in her family leaving their country in exile to Bolivia. There, she married and participated in social gatherings. Then she moved to Peru, where she worked as a teacher and started her literary career, relating with the local writers and organizing literary evenings. Years later, Gorriti traveled to Buenos Aires were she published new books.
